Have you always been a maker. If not how did you get here?

No! I had a total career change in my mid 30s after having my first child.  I was working in corporate fundraising for the National Trust at the time, but always harboured a desire to do something creative.  I started taking evening classes in silversmithing and my love for jewellery making grew from there.  Whilst on maternity leave I realised that if I was ever going to make the leap then it had to be then, so I left my job and set up my business.  At first it was very part time, working around the kids, but has grown over the years into my full time job (lucky me!)

Is making your full time job?

I am a full time maker, but I also teach - both in person wax carving jewellery making classes and as a mentor on the Jewellers Academy Diploma in Silver Jewellery.

I absolutely love sharing the joy of jewellery making with other people.

What does a typical day look like for you? I work from home and have a small studio space (crammed with bikes, laundry etc!) at the back of my house. I usually settle down to work at around 9am once everyone has gone and the house is nice and quiet. My day will often involve a mix of making at the bench, admin/marketing type business stuff and possibly zoom calls with students. I love the variety and as someone who hates being told what to do, being my own boss is perfect for me.

My inspiration comes from the world around me, particularly abstract art and architecture. I'm all about those shapes!

What sets you apart from other makers in your category? That's so hard to answer, there are so many brilliant jewellers out there! I think what sets my work apart is my design process. I don't like to make pieces just for the sake of it, but I work really hard on producing a really coherent and well thought out design that isn't trend led, but that stands the test of time. I guess I would describe my work as classic forever pieces, but with my own modern twist.

Favourite product? Argh, it's always so hard to choose just one piece as it changes often, but I think my current favourite is the architecture-inspired Athena pendant in gold plated recycled silver. It really is one of those necklaces that goes with anything.

What have you got from being a part of the Crafty Fox community? I've only been a Craft Fox member for just under a year, but I have really loved it. I find the markets so well curated and also well attended by people who really understand the value in handmade and want to support independent makers. I've also found everyone really friendly which is great when you're a newcomer as it can all feel a bit intimidating.

What sustainable practices have you integrated into your business? My pieces are all made from recycled silver and gold and I create in small batches to minimise waste. Every year I produce an OFFCUTS collection which is made entirely from my scrap silver and gold. My packaging is recycled or recyclable where possible and I also have a box return scheme where customers can return their jewellery boxes in return for money off their next purchase. I also offer a Wear, Care & Repair service where customers can buy replacement parts for their jewellery.

I'm working on a new collection of jewellery, hopefully with a view to launching it later this year.
